Replacement of Foyer AHU at the Brighton Centre

Project Overview

The project involved the supply and installation of a replacement Airedale Air Handling Unit (AHU) at the Brighton Centre. The objective was to enhance air efficiency while maintaining a comfortable environment for visitors and staff.

What is an Airedale AHU?

An Airedale Air Handling Unit (AHU) is a critical component in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems. It regulates and circulates air as part of the building’s climate control system, ensuring optimal temperature and air quality. The AHU integrates heating, cooling, filtration, and ventilation functions to maintain a comfortable indoor environment.

Description of Works

The contractor attended the site and carried out all necessary works, including but not limited to:

  • Isolation, decommissioning, and making safe of the existing Foyer Supply AHU
  • Local isolation and draining down of the existing Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) and Chilled Water (CHW) systems within the plant room to facilitate removal and replacement works
  • Stripping out and removal of the existing Foyer supply AHU, including ancillaries and associated pipework, up to the nearest ductwork and pipework connection points
  • Installation of a new Foyer supply AHU, complete with associated pipework, ductwork connections, power, and control connections
  • Filling, venting, balancing, testing, dosing, and commissioning of the completed LTHW and CHW systems
  • Installation of insulation on all new pipework runs, valves, and flanges
  • Implementation of variable speed drives for enhanced energy efficiency
  • Installation of new small power supplies to the air handling plant
  • New containment systems for small power supplies
  • Building Management System (BMS) control updates to serve the new AHU
  • Provision of record drawings and O&M manuals for future reference and maintenance

Building Specifications

The Brighton Centre is a public events and conference facility spanning five floors, featuring a primary event hall. Throughout the four-week project duration, the building remained fully operational, requiring careful planning and execution to minimise disruption.

Health & Safety Compliance

The project adhered to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) to ensure a safe working environment. All activities complied with industry best practices and safety protocols, guaranteeing the well-being of workers and building occupants.

Challenges & Solutions

No major challenges were encountered. Effective planning and strong coordination among the project team facilitated a seamless installation process.

Project Outcome

  • Installation was completed within the agreed four-week timeframe
  • The system was successfully commissioned and handed over to the client on schedule
  • The new AHU significantly improved energy efficiency and indoor comfort
  • The project met all client requirements with no issues reported.

Conclusion

The successful replacement of the AHU showcased efficient planning, skilled execution, and strict adherence to health and safety regulations. The client received a fully operational system along with a comprehensive Operation and Maintenance Manual (O&M), ensuring long-term reliability and performance.
