About:

Brighton Dome forms part of a 200-year-old Grade 1 listed building complex containing the Corn Exchange and Museum.

Replacement of Air Handling Units & Hot Water Service Generation Replacement

These works relate to the replacement of services specific to the Dome, mainly confined to the basement plantroom and roof top work areas.

Scope of Work

The replacement of life-expired supply and extract ventilation plant serving the basement chorus and soloist rooms, the ground floor toilet supply Air Handling Unit and toilet extract twin fan.

The replacement of life-expired Hot Water Service generation plant within the basement plant room.

The Challenges

Various challenges were faced throughout the duration of the Project.

The Dome was still operable and therefore we faced the challenge of noise issues throughout the works whilst rehearsals took place. This was overcome by commencing works early and identifying aspects of works where noise levels would be increased and carrying out prior to rehearsals.

A major challenge faced was the lifting of the Air-Handling Equipment onto the roof area of The Dome.

This needed to be done out of hours and road closures were required, in order for the lift to be carried out safely and with no risk to the general public. Full temporary lighting of the area was also required and arranged. The road closures were organised through Brighton & Hove City Council, and a full detailed program of works were designed and distributed to all parties concerned. A pre-start meeting was arranged to specifically detail each step of the road closure and lift, ensuring all parties were fully aware of all procedures.

The crane lift was carried out successfully and within the designated hours, which enabled the road to open. A statement of gratitude was received by Mike Bayton, Premises Manager of Brighton & Hove City Council.
